Obesity: The Receptionist Of Your Body…

Posted by: ariyes on: 03 Jan, 2010

obesity_4From the heading, all of you may have started to think that how can obesity be a receptionist?

What do you mean by receptionist? – Wow! A sweet, beautiful girl who welcomes everybody at an office with her soft voice. Obesity is like that- it welcomes softly all the major diseases in our body.

Obesity is widely regarded as a pandemic with potentially disastrous consequences for human health. More than 20% of adults in the UK, and more than 30% in USA, are obese the prevalence of obesity has increased ∼threefold within the last 20 years and continues to rise. In developing countries, average national rates of obesity are not nearly so high, but these figures disguise alarmingly high rates of obesity in many urban communities.

Obesity has adverse effects on both mortality and morbidity. Changes in mortality are difficult to analyze due to the confounding effects of lower body weight in cigarette smokers. However, it is clear that the lowest mortality rates are seen in individuals with a BMI(body Mass Index, an unit of measuring obesity, with the normal range is 18-25) of 18.5-24. Data from population studies, such as that in Framingham, USA, show that for individuals aged between 30 and 42 years, the risk of death increases by 1% per annum for each 0.5 kg increase in weight; for those aged 50-62, this figure is 2%. The result is that obesity reduces life expectancy by 7.1 years in men and 5.8 years in women amongst non-smokers, and by 13.7 and 13.3 years respectively amongst smokers. Coronary heart disease is the major cause of death but cancer rates are also increased in the overweight, especially colorectal cancer in males and cancer of the gallbladder, biliary tract, breast, endometrium and cervix in females. Epidemic obesity is accompanied by an epidemic of type 2 diabetes. Obesity may lead to profound psychological consequences for individuals. Society also suffers from the effects of obesity-related disability and early retirement.

Behavioural modification to avoid some of the effects of the ‘obesogenic’ environment is the cornerstone of long-term control of weight. A study of subjects followed up after successful weight loss in Colorado found that the principal predictors of sustained weight loss are the maintenance of high physical activity levels and the regular consumption of breakfast (suggesting a regular eating pattern). All patients should be advised to maximise their physical activity. Where possible, this should be incorporated in the daily routine (e.g. walking rather than driving to work) since this is more likely to be sustained. Alternative exercise, e.g. swimming, may be necessary if musculoskeletal complications prevent walking. Changes in eating behaviour (including food selection, portion size control, avoidance of snacking, regular meals to encourage satiety, and substitution of sugar with artificial sweeteners) should be discussed. Support from a trained health-care professional (e.g. a dietitian) and participation in a group discussion may be helpful.

        Breath Holding Asthma!

Posted by: imran on: 30 Dec, 2009

asthmaNow a day Bronchial Asthma is a common problem among the city dwellers around the world. Why city dwellers? Specially due to dust- house dust, industrial dust, chemical dust, tobacco smoke, pollen, mites, or animal dander and other allergens(the very micro sized particle which cause allergy, sometimes cannot be seen even in naked eye) always floating around us. However, it is also found severely sometimes in many people without defined allergies. Loud crying, sneezing or hearty laughing may also bring symptoms. Even cold air can cause this problem-When someone with asthma exercises or breathes in cold air, it occurs. Stress and anxiety also such a condition in which the airways narrows – ultimately cause respiratory disturbance.

So, what do you understand from above few words? The basic principal of asthma is the narrowing of our airway at any point along its total pathway by any foreign substance, environmental or physical condition. In a person with asthma, the airways narrow in response to allergens that don’t affect normal lungs. In an asthma attack, the muscles of the lower part of the airway go into spasm and the tissues lining there swell up and secrete mucous inside the airway. Inhaled air gets trapped in the bottom of the lungs, forcing the patient to use the top part to gasp for air. In severe form lungs airways become so narrow and clogged that breathing is impossible. The episode may pass quickly as usual or last more than a day and may become deadly.

An asthma attack may begin suddenly with wheezing, coughing and difficulty in breathing. Wheezing is a whistling sound, particularly noticeable when the person breathes out. Some people experience asthma attack only as mild and occasional episodes; for them the condition is an occasional discomfort. For others, attack can be frequent and serious, requiring emergency medical management. The person will not be able to utter a word without stopping for breath. However, wheezing may diminish because of gradual decrease of air is moving in and out of the lungs. Then if the person’s oxygen supply is severely limited, confusion, lethargy and blue skin color occur. Rarely some of the lungs’ air sacs (alveoli) may rupture; air enters in the pleural space (the space between the membrane layers covering the whole lungs) or accumulates around the organs inside the chest cage. These all worsens the shortness of breath followed by death.

So these are the breath holding situations with an attack of Asthma. If you have asthma, you should go to physician for regular check up of your lung and continue careful monitoring; you will need immediate medical support for a deadly breathlessness without neglecting it more.

Easy and Effective Workouts for Busy Moms

Posted by: imran on: 28 Dec, 2009

Easy and Effective Workouts for Busy MomsThere are so many moms who do not get time to go to the gym and work out. They tend to grow bulky even after giving birth to a child. While giving birth moms gain weight and instead of losing that weight, they gain more weight for the lack of exercise. They do not get time for exercising as they remain so busy taking care of the babies. But it is also a fact that regular exercise can give them more energy and make them livelier.

If moms cannot go out of home to exercise then you should try at home workouts. It will save you the time and energy of going to gym and coming back and all that. Stay at home. Just spend a few minutes and do the exercise.

The exercises that busy moms choose must be quick and effective enough to burn the calories. You will have to choose an exercise that will last for 10 minutes and that will burn enough calories for you to stay fit. There are a few effective 10 minute work outs that you might try and trust me when I say that you will love those. These exercises focus on every single part of the body and give you a full workout. You could find that 10 minutes slot while your baby is asleep or taking a nap. You could also ask your spouse to look after the kids for 10 minutes and do it. Buy the DVD and play it. Follow the instructions and complete the exercise.

If you can spare yourself for 30 minutes then go for a treadmill machine and sprint for 20 minutes. You might also take your children for a walk. This is helpful because, your baby will have fresh air and you get to do the exercise. If you walk, make it a 45 minutes session. And walk at a pace that elevates your heart rate.

No matter how busy a mom you are, you can manage 10 minutes to exercise. Continue with the exercise and once you see it’s effective, on ahead and add a few more minutes to your exercising time.
