Effect of Alcohol on the Memory

Posted by: Kayes on: 14 Dec, 2008

Excessive alcohol is very dangerous for so many reasons. One of the man reasons is that it has dramatic effect on the memory ability. Excess alcohol can lead to memory loss of several types. It appears as an obstacle in the process of memory formation, memory retrieval and limits our ability to think properly.

There can be several types of memory loss due to alcohol. Fragmentary memory loss is one of them. This is the result of excessive drinking and causes the drunk to forget things that occurred while he was drunk. He might not remember a single thing about it unless given any clue about it. This type of memory loss can be very tricky.

Blackouts are the next level of memory loss. When a blackout occurs due to heavy alcohol consumption, the person will not be able to recall any of the events, even if prompted with cues. This is because the brain was not able to complete the process for making a memory. The person loses a gap of time and will not get it back.

Another serous consequence of excessive drinking might have is alcohol dementia. This disorder is also known as Wernicke-Korsakoff syndromke. This is a combination of two mental disorders. The wernicke syndrome is a nerve disorder that affects the nerves of both central and peripheral nervous system. This occurs due to poor thiamin level caused by excess amount of alcohol. And the later one, Korsakoff syndrome is a disorder that makes the victim make up detailed stories and tell them to people as if they were true. This hampers the analytical ability and problem solving ability of a person.

You will have to control the amount of alcohol that you take and stay fit. And for those who already have memoy problems due to excessive alcohol, you can not afford to leave it untreated as it could take serious shape like brain damage if not taken care.

You have to consider what alcohol does to you long term any time you consume it. Not only do you lose your athletic ability to do things that day, but you also tire your body out for the following day (and even week if you really tie one on.)
