Sleep is one important part of our daily activity to give our body rest and rejuvenate for further action. Our body needs definite hours of rest in form of sleep for healthy functioning. The metabolism and hormone regulation of our body are integrally correlated. Any change in physical activity or habit results in change in the whole body mechanism. This article gives an idea how inadequate sleep can cause an imbalance in the insulin activity and in turn can affect the glucose metabolism. There have been ongoing researches and studies to understand various processes in the body and those researches have revealed interesting facts. Now researchers opine sleeplessness bears potential risk of developing resistance towards insulin metabolism in the body and makes prone to type 2 Diabetes.

To support the hypothesis a study was performed by selecting 9 healthy subjects. The subjects were tested for the insulin activity in their body and the outcome was recorded. This measurement was done in two stages. First the subjects were tested for the insulin sensitivity one after a normal eight hours sleep and then the same test was performed after a four hours of short sleep in the same subjects. He results were recorded and compared subsequently. The findings and data indicated the sensitivity of insulin was found to be dependent on duration of sleep in the previous night quoted Dr. Esther Donga of Leiden University medical Centre in the Netherlands. In a news Release from the Endocrine Society Dr. Donga said that speculation of the adverse effects sleepless nights over insulin activity is quite appealing. He added multiple sleepless nights can have considerable bad outcome over the glucose tolerance. Even one sleepless night can also product effects on metabolism of insulin in a person.

The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology published this piece of work in the June issue.

It is observed in the past decade that western societies that people have shortened sleep duration resulting in insulin resistance as pr Dr. Donga. She said simultaneous occurrence of sleeplessness and diabetes may not be just by chance. She also added short duration of sleep has considerable effect on metabolic activity of insulin than comprehended earlier.

She stressed on the provision of further research to establish link between enhanced sleep by medication and balance of glucose levels in diabetic population. No doubt if this has been established, further research can open doors for prevention of complex health issues arising from diabetes by controlling the disease.

The world has become so busy and it’s still getting busier. We work so much that sometimes we cross our limit both physically and mentally. In this process we put a lot of stress on our body and on our precious eyes.

When we try to focus on more than one thing, we are actually changing our vision focus so rapidly. This dispersion puts excess pressure on your eyes. The pressure is harmful because our eyes are not meant to be watching two things at the same time.

Do a test to find out how good your eye sight is. Pick a friend of yours who has a perfect eye sight. Place two pebbles (pebble A and pebble B) at a distance of 45cm from each other. Now tell your friend to stare at the two pebbles at the same time. If they do not put an effort they cannot. That is because they have a normal sight. But people with myopia or other vision problems can do it effortlessly as they are used to it.

If you have a problem with your vision then follow the process I mentioned above and try to see a single pebble. Do not stare. Blink your eyes as you normally do and take deep breaths. It’s not the effort you are putting in is helping you, but it’s the effort you are not putting in, is actually helping you. Give a break to your eyes and help them to relax. Your vision will get better with time.

Myopia or short sightedness is a vision condition that occurs when the eye ball increases in length. This results in the mismatch of eye length. The cornea loses the focusing ability through this process.
A person with myopia will have no problem in watching objects close to the eyes, but will have a definite problem while seeing objects placed at a far distance.

The myopia usually starts at a very early age. But it’s during the teenage, that it starts showing and it turns into a noticeable problem once we are adults. Research has shown that watching excess TV will worsen the myopia condition. So better limit ourselves to watching TV. Specially for children, the parents should not allow too much exposure to TV for them. And while watching the TV keep a safe distance. Do not watch it from a very close distance. Take your children to the doctors for regular eye tests.

If you have shortsightedness, your optometrists might advice you to wear glasses or lenses of different power according to your need. You might also opt for the laser surgery. This method is used to cure your short sightedness and is gaining a huge popularity. However, the laser surgery is a very expensive process and as it is a modern technology, the long term effects are yet to be seen.
